John Oliver Takes Aim at WWE Seven Days Before WrestleMania

John Oliver Takes Aim at WWE Seven Days Before WrestleMania”

Oliver showed a chart going into detail of the expected death rate of the population as a whole and compared it to former National Football League players and pro wrestlers.

John Oliver's Last Week Tonight took plenty of shots at WWE during their latest episode.

Oliver continued that "it's impossible to overstate just how involved Vince is" in WWE - he oversees storylines, scripts and plays a fictional, villainous version of himself - but "the shocking thing about McMahon and his company is the extent to which he has shielded himself from responsibility for his wrestlers' welfare". But as fun as it is to watch Stone Cold Steve Austin spray The Corporation with a beer hose, the discussion took a dark turn once Oliver started talking about how many former wrestlers have died in the last few years: King Kong Bundy, Chyna, Roddy Piper... A deep dive on the "independent contractor" issue followed, as the host broke down the ways WWE use this classification to undermine talent, letting them get away with not providing health insurance or a pension scheme.

Oliver said: "While the character Vince is an a**hole, it's important to know that the real Vince is also an a**hole". He pointed to successful fan campaigns to include more female wrestlers and resist making Roman Reigns the franchise successor to The Rock, even booing him for 8 minutes straight ("you may think that's harsh, but I'd argue that's the only rational response to someone with permanently wet hair", Oliver quipped).

You can view the entire segment in the video above.

In regards to funding for older wrestlers, John Oliver goes on to say the National Football League now have these contingency plans, including health reimbursement and a Legacy Fund. Fans are currently helping to pay for medical expenses and funeral costs for wrestlers via donations.

In the wake of fans advocating for female wrestlers with the #GiveDivasAChance, and being rewarded for it with an all-female main event at WrestleMania 35, Oliver advocated that they bring chants to WrestleMania advocating for worker benefits as well. "And when you've lost the moral high ground to the fucking National Football League, you're morally subterranean".
