May to meet Merkel, Macron ahead of crucial Brexit summit”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will host Theresa May for talks on Tuesday, on the eve of a crucial European Union summit when the British premier is hoping to convince the bloc to grant her a new Brexit extension to June 30.

The leaders of the 27 remaining EU nations have been summoned to Brussels for an emergency meeting of the European Council on Wednesday, just two days before the United Kingdom is due to leave under current plans.

A deputation of Tory MPs from the executive of the backbench 1922 Committee went to Number 10 yesterday to warn the Prime Minister not to compromise with Labour.

"Our intention is to engage further with the opposition today. and we hope that will lead to formal face-to-face discussions" later Monday, a Downing Street spokeswoman said.

After officials from the two sides met yesterday, the fresh round of talks will include Mrs May's defacto deputy, Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington, and Labour's shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer.

A deal on an extension is expected to be agreed when European leaders gather in Brussels tomorrow evening.

Mr Corbyn said: "Talks have to mean a movement and so far there's been no change in those red lines".

"If the United Kingdom were to commit to remaining in the customs union, it would make a total and utter nonsense of the referendum result", said the former foreign secretary in his regular column in the Daily Telegraph.

"And it is doubly incredible that the government is - so we are told - willing to accede to his terms". Boris Johnson, who is one of the favourites to succeed May, has said that "surrender" on a customs union is something that "cannot, must not and will not happen".

Steffen Seibert said the cohesion of the remaining 27 European Union members had always been important for Germany and discussions would be held in that spirit.

Mr Macron has previously spoken out against offering the British a Brexit extension, stating that the United Kingdom must provide a "credible alternative plan backed by a majority" to avoid a No Deal Brexit.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told reporters at a G7 meeting in France on Saturday that it was time for the Brexit crisis to end.

"The British authorities and the British parliament need to understand that (the EU) is not going to be able to constantly exhaust itself with the ups and downs of domestic British politics", he said.

However, the final decision on an extension lies with the EU.

Britain's parliament is expected later Monday to approve a bill to force the government to delay Brexit.
