YouTube to develop its own choose-your-own-adventure shows

YouTube to develop its own choose-your-own-adventure shows”

In terms of YouTube's own ambitions, Bloomblerg reports that a new business unit led by Ben Relles - who'd previously been charged with creating unscripted programs - will oversee the development of the company's new interactive shows.

Netflix's Bandersnatch has proven so popular with viewers that it may have now prompted Google to try out interactive TV, with plans reportedly underway to bring Choose Your Own Adventure style shows to the search giant's own streaming platform.

Interactive content has been around for years, but the concept got a high-profile boost with the release of Netflix's "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch" last fall. YouTube has already experimented with interactive advertisements but the equation changes when there are multiple choices involved.

"Our goal is to create incredible programming focused on music, education, YouTube creators and some lighthouse shows", said Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content for YouTube. Netflix remembers the choices a user make throughout a story and makes adjustments accordingly.

But YouTube, a division of Alphabet Inc.'s Google, isn't giving up on original programming altogether.

YouTube is restructuring its programming staff as part of a new strategy.

Now YouTube says it's also planning to do something similar, by making some of the series on its site interactive too. Relles, who has worked at YouTube for eight years, just started in the role and is still exploring the best ways for YouTube viewers to participate in stories. "Ben has an intuitive and experienced understanding of how the platform can enhance content making him the ideal choice to develop this exciting new division".

YouTube is expected to unveil a new slate of shows at an event in NY in a few weeks time. That will include in some cases an exclusive window on its YouTube Premium service, which is priced at $11.99 per month in the U.S. The "Single Slate" move signaled a shift for YouTube Originals toward content with a wider appeal that can amass a big audience on the free, ad-supported side as well as SVOD.
