Steve Smith, David Warner named in Australia's Cricket World Cup squad

Steve Smith, David Warner named in Australia's Cricket World Cup squad”

Smith and Warner are now playing for Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively in the IPL after serving their 12-month ban for their role in the ball-tampering scandal that rocked Australian cricket previous year.

Steve Smith and David Warner.

Chairman of Selectors Trevor Hohns said that while Hazlewood would miss out on the World Cup he would be a big part of Australia's plans for the Ashes. "Unfortunately, from the recent squad which toured India and the UAE, Peter Handscomb, Ashton Turner and Kane Richardson have made way for the above inclusions, but all three have been included in Australia A squad for the tour of England".

Both players also regained their Cricket Australia contracts as the country's new list of contracted players was announced - less than three weeks after becoming eligible for worldwide selection again after bans imposed for their involvement in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa past year.

With them being included in the World Cup squad, it becomes imperative for Smith and Warner to attend the team's training camp for the mega event.

"Mitchell Starc and Jhye Richardson have both been named subject to fitness".

Australia World Cup squad: Aaron Finch (captain), David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey (vc), Pat Cummins (vc), Jhye Richardson, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jason Behrendorff, Adam Zampa, Nathan Lyon.

Meanwhile, pacer Hazlewood, who is out of action since January due to injury, was confident of recovering before the World Cup but the selectors chose to give him rest keeping Ashes in mid.

He added that there had been some tough calls to make given the depth of talent available, but was happy to see Smith and Warner return to the global fold.

Hazlewood was the biggest name to miss out with Warner and Smith back into the Australia squad.

"Having not played at the highest level for some time, we feel this will provide him with the best preparation to get some quality cricket under his belt, " Hohns said.

Another notable absentee is fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, who has been sidelined with a back injury since January.

Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh have been rewarded for their good recent form with selection, while skipper Aaron Finch will lead a batting line-up that also includes all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell.
