Two children killed as storms, tornadoes move through Texas

Two children killed as storms, tornadoes move through Texas”

The massive storm system that killed several people from Texas to MS is now barreling east, threatening to spawn tornadoes and other catastrophic weather from New England to the Gulf Coast.

There was widespread damage in Alto, a town of about 1,200, and the school district canceled classes until its buildings can be inspected to ensure they are safe.

The storms produced additional tornadoes throughout Louisiana and MS on Saturday night as the storm moved east threatening the upper Ohio Valley and central Appalachians to the upper Gulf Coast on Sunday, before moving to the mid-Atlantic.

The threat of severe weather will likely increase throughout the day, the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center said.

University spokesman Sid Salter said some debris, possibly carried by the tornado, was found on campus, but no injuries were reported and no buildings were damaged.

They expect a round of storms in the afternoon or early evening hours, though forecasters said it may not bring severe weather. None of the injuries were thought to be life-threatening. In addition to tornadoes, many of these storms featured heavy rain, large hail and damaging winds.

One person was killed in northeastern MS when a tree crashed onto his trailer, Monroe County Road Manager Sonny Clay said at a news conference, adding that a tornado had struck. Nineteen residents were taken to hospitals, including two in critical condition. No injuries have been reported, but officials said several businesses and vehicles were damaged.

A tornado was reported in the area 140 miles (225 kilometres) southwest of Memphis, Tenn., at the time. A possible tornado knocked out power and left damage in Troy, about 50 miles (80 kilometres) south of Montgomery.

The roof of a hotel in New Albany, Mississippi, was damaged, although the cause was unclear.

The National Weather Service says strong storms have the potential to develop again over north Georgia, including the metro Atlanta area. A mobile home community was damaged, but no injuries are being reported.

A MS man, identified as 95-year-old Roy Ratliff died on Saturday when a tornado caused a tree to fall onto his home, Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley said.

In East Texas, authorities say two children were killed when high winds toppled a tree onto the back of the family vehicle while it was in motion. More than 140,000 customers lost power in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas as of late Saturday. The weather service said the system is expected to shift to the Ohio Valley and the Southeast on Sunday.

At Georgia's Augusta National Golf Club, organizers of The Masters golf tournament moved up tee times Sunday to try to beat unsafe weather.
