Franklin, who died in August at age 76, was recognised "for her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades".

The winners of the 2019 Pulitzer Prizes were announced today, and those honored included reporters covering mass shootings and investigating the president.

The Journal revealed previous year that then-candidate Trump's personal lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen had paid $130,000 in the run-up to his 2016 election to silence porn star Stormy Daniels, who said she had an affair with Trump.

The massive New York Times investigation from last October, laid out in an article headlined "Trump Engaged in Suspect Tax Schemes as He Reaped Riches From His Father", was honored with the Pulitzer for Explanatory Reporting. Trump has denied having affairs with either woman.

He has also denied that his family did anything improper regarding his taxes, calling the Times report a "hit piece".

Harriet Ryan, Matt Hamilton and Paul Pringle won the prize Monday for their stories about Dr. George Tyndall, which started with an anonymous tip Ryan received.

In the aftermath of the series, the university's president resigned, and more than 650 women have sued USC, alleging the school failed to protect them from sexual abuse.

Messenger found defendants across Missouri who owed thousands of dollars in "board bills" for time spent in jail even though they had fulfilled their sentences or served out parole.

The Pulitzers also honour the best in literature, theatre, and journalism. Congratulations to Aretha Franklin.

She is the first individual woman to earn the special citation since it was first awarded in 1930.

Novelist Richard Powers won the fiction prize for The Overstory, a multi-narrative look at nine Americans who are brought together unfolding natural catastrophe; while David W Blight picked up the history prize for his acclaimed biography of Frederick Douglas, the escaped slave who became a leader of the abolitionist movement.

In addition, Jeffrey C. Stewart '74 M.A., '79 Ph.D. won this year's Pulitzer Prize in the biography category for "The New Negro: The Life of Alain Locke".

This year's music recipient of the Pulitzer is composer Ellen Reid for "prism", an operatic work exploring the trauma of sexual assault that received its world premiere in November by the Los Angeles Opera.
