Facebook building voice assistant to rival Apple’s, Google’s”

The company confirmed the news on Wednesday after CNBC reported that the social network was creating a voice assistant to rival Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, and the Google Assistant.

Sources close to the development said that Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality group inside Facebook has been working on the project on the project since 2018 with Ira Snyder, director of AR/VR and Facebook Assistant leading the group.

The virtual assistant market is already overcrowded with at least a dozen companies around the world all trying to push their own product. Facebook a year ago shut down a chat-based assistant called "M" in its messaging app. US Immigration & Customs Enforcement Officials Created Fake FB Profiles To Apprehend Indians, Says Facebook. Therefore, Facebook will be very late in the game if this rumor is true. It launched a similar product back in 2015 called Facebook M. But unlike the that is now in the works, Facebook M was merely a text-based virtual AI assistant which resided only in Facebook Messenger and eventually died in 2018.

The Facebook assistant faces stiff competition. Right now, Portal users interact with Alexa for complex tasks. Amazon and Google are far ahead in the smart speaker market with 67% and 30% shares in the U.S.in 2018, respectively, according to eMarketer.

The company in November began selling its Portal video chat device, which lets users place video calls using Facebook Messenger.
