Facebook bans figureheads of 'dangerous' far-right movements

Facebook bans figureheads of 'dangerous' far-right movements”

The company led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday that it removed the accounts, fan pages and groups associated with the above individuals from Facebook and Instagram after reevaluating their content or reexamining their activities outside of Facebook.

Facebook on Thursday said the site was banning several high-profile users for violating the social network's rules against unsafe individuals and organizations, including Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and Infowars publisher Alex Jones.

The social network, which has taken heat from civil rights groups over the last few years for not moving quickly or strongly enough against hate groups and figures, has long said that it applies its policies against risky individuals and organizations without regard to ideology or motivation.

"We've always banned individuals or organizations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology", a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement provided to CNN Business. It just took a while to deliver these bans due to the "extensive" process of evaluating potential offenders. Yiannopoulos, another alt-right social media star, publicly praised McInnes this year, and Loomer appeared with him at a rally.

The decision applies to both Facebook's flagship social network and Instagram, its photo-sharing app, the company confirmed.

But Facebook and its counterparts have largely resisted permanent bans, holding that objectionable speech is permissible, so long as it doesn't bleed into hate.

Conservatives have accused the social network of suppressing their speech, but Facebook has denied those allegations.

Facebook banned several prominent accounts promoting white nationalism on the platform on Thursday.

When Milo Yiannopoulos was banned from Twitter it was for, "repeated violations of the Twitter rules, specifically our rules prohibiting participating or inciting targeted abuse of individuals".

"We applaud Facebook for taking this positive step toward removing hate actors from the company's platforms", she said. "Facebook can help curb the spread of extremism, hate, and bigotry that flourished on its platforms if it remains open to reforming enforcement measures".
