From Brazil: Official statement denies Arsenal agreement”

Arsenal have held talks with their former midfielder Edu about taking on the key job of technical director this summer.

Edu, who was a member of the Invincibles, is now a coordinator for the Brazil national team and is set to join us after the Copa América, which is being held in his native Brazil this year.

Edu played four seasons at Arsenal, from 2001 through 2005, and played a key role in Arsenal's Invincibles era, especially the undefeated 2003-2004 season.

Following the recent claims saying Edu Gaspar has chose to leave the Brazilian national team and join Arsenal, the CBF has now responded to it. He subsequently became general manager with the Brazilian national team.

He retired in 2010 after a 13-year professional that also included spells with Corinthians and Valencia.

Head of recruitment Sven Mislintat departed in February after only 14 mixed months at Arsenal and Monchi then turned down the opportunity to take on a new technical director role in favour of returning to Sevilla.

Once in place, Edu will work alongside Sanllehi overseeing all technical aspects of the club, from player recruitment and contract renewals to coaching practises and the academy.

The Gunners now do not have anyone in the technical director role and earlier it was assumed that head of recruitment Sven Mislinat would take the position at the end of the season.

Arsenal refused to comment on Edu's return to north London when contacted by Goal.
