HP Omen X 2S gaming laptop adds a clever second display

HP Omen X 2S gaming laptop adds a clever second display”

HP (NYSE:HPQ) is out with a slate of new gaming products led by the 15-inch, dual-screen OMEN X 2S.

According to HP, "82 percent of people use their mobile phones for messaging during gaming sessions, 61 percent listen to music, and 49 percent watch game related live streams, video content and browse websites", and the HP Omen X 25 aims to bring that functionality to an easy-viewed screen above the keyboard, so players aren't distracted by their smartphones.

So, you can play YouTube videos on the screen, use it to browse Spotify, message friends on WhatsApp or keep up with Twitch and Discord chats.

The Omen X 2S will be available as a pre-configured $US2,700 ($3,882) laptop with an Nvidia 2080, Intel i7-9750H HC CPU, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, 1TB SSD, and a 144Hz IPS Panel.

We'll hopefully be getting in the HP Omen X 25 to find out for ourselves with the second display is worth that high price. You can also use the second screen to mirror part of the main screen, so if you wanted to just highlight, say, the radar in CS:GO, you could broadcast just that part of the screen.

I don't think you'll be able to use it to remove that stuff from the main screen altogether, though - it still needs to mirror what's there, after all - so it may not actually be that useful after all once I try it out for myself.

The Omen 15 and Omen 17 are available with 144 and 240 Hz 1080p displays and NVIDIA G-SYNC graphics, starting at $1,050 and $1,100 respectively. That's according to the fine print in their press release, but they also fail to mention what settings they used and at what resolution, and it's also not really very clear whether the standard thermal solution result was obtained using the same laptop specification, or something else altogether, so make of that what you will.

Just the other day I was asking for more companies to do something a bit more wild with their gaming laptop designs.

The second screen is powered by HP's own software, using a mix of the Omen Command Center UI and HP Mobile View, two software suites now available for HP laptops-with the former intended for gaming computers specifically.

All three laptops will also be arriving in the United Kingdom sometime this July, with prices starting at £900 for the Pavilion, and £1350 for the two Omens. We're still waiting on Australian pricing and a release date.
