Ways To Reduce Your Risk Of Dementia, According To A New Report”

The 12 lifestyle choices and conditions which fuel dementia have been identified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the most definitive list ever of how to avoid mental decline in later life.

Carol Routledge, director of Research at Alzheimer's Research UK, said dementia was the leading cause of death in Britain, but only 34 per cent of adults realised they could reduce the risk, and the World Health Organization report helped to clarify what was known and where evidence was lacking. They include regular physical exercise, not using tobacco, drinking less alcohol, maintaining healthy blood pressure and eating a healthy diet - particularly a Mediterranean one.

Dementia is a broad category of diseases that reduce brain function beyond what might be expected from normal ageing.

It also affects thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language and judgement and results from a variety of diseases and injuries that affect the brain, such as Alzheimer's or stroke. 10 million people are diagnosed with a form of dementia each year, which may triple the total number of patients by 2050, CNN reports.

"As numerous risk factors for dementia are shared with those of non-communicable diseases, the key recommendations can be effectively integrated into programmes for tobacco cessation, cardiovascular disease risk reduction and nutrition".

Since dementia is now incurable and so many experimental therapies have failed, focusing on prevention may "give us more benefit in the shorter term", Carrillo said.

It added that the number is projected to almost double every 20 years, increasing to 3.48 million by 2030 and 7.62 million by 2050.

New guidelines for preventing dementia focus on keeping the whole body healthy as a way to prevent mental decline.

They will also be useful to governments, policy makers and planning authorities as a guide in developing policy and designing programmes that encourage healthy lifestyles.
