Campaigning in WB to end tomorrow after EC's unprecedented action

Campaigning in WB to end tomorrow after EC's unprecedented action”

Shah accused TMC of orchestrating violence.

During the violence, a bust of Bengali icon Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was vandalised.

In a hurriedly-convened press conference, Deputy Election Commissioner Chandra Bhushan Kumar said it was for the first time that such an action has been taken using constitutional powers of the poll panel.

The EC also said it is extremely disappointed at the anarchic scenes on Kolkata's streets on Tuesday and removed ADG CID Rajeev Kumar and Home Secretary Atri Bhattacharya. "He should report to MHA by 10 am tomorrow".

The state police said no Trinamool member had been detained, but the independent election commission said it planned to investigate allegations of vandalism by party supporters.

- ANI (@ANI) May 15, 2019Election Commission: This is probably the first time that ECI has invoked Article 324 in this manner but it may not be last in cases of repetition of lawlessness and violence which vitiate the conduct of polls in a peaceful manner.

"Elections matter in Bengal much more than most other states because (the) party is the only form through which people tend to organise themselves", said Dwaipayan Bhattacharyya, a political science professor at New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University. Observers, he said, had pointed out that senior Trinamool leaders were going around saying "central forces will leave after elections while we will remain".

"There have been no instances of violence in any other place except in West Bengal", Shah said.

"A constitutional authority, the Election Commission of India, has effectively held Bengal to be a state in Anarchy".

In an unprecedented action, the Election Commission on Wednesday cut short the campaign period in West Bengal by a day for the final phase of Lok Sabha elections in view of the violence during BJP president Amit Shah's roadshow on Tuesday. BJP was not backing away from a fight either with Modi, while addressing a rally at Basirhat in the state, holding Banerjee responsible for the violence during Shah's Kolkata roadshow. Jain, who visited the state, said there was a distinct resistance and non-cooperation from the district administration and police with providing a level playing field to all candidates for campaigning and in providing voters a threat-free environment. The BJP chief presented three photographs to prove his claim.
