'In the mood': Federer seeks more clay matches in Rome”

Roger Federer's return to the Italian Open was scuppered by rain on Wednesday as officials were forced to cancel the day's play after waiting in vain for more than nine hours for wintery weather to clear.

"I was in the mood to play", Federer said on Tuesday after a practice session on the Foro Italico's Campo Centrale.

The veteran was also defeated by Thiem in the quarter-finals of the recently concluded Madrid Open.

"That's obviously disappointing to hear", said Federer. "It's announcing to be a very exciting season, even a more complicated one for the top guys next year, I believe, because this is the year where they truly are breaking through, truly are gaining a lot of experience".

In it Kyrgios acknowledged he did the "least work of anyone on tour", hinted that tennis had taken him to some "dark places", and said there was "no chance" that he would ever be able to become a player who performed consistently.

"They made it in a way like they rewarded the fans who bought tickets earlier, which is sort of odd, but okay. Regardless of what happens here, I just think it's good for me to play matches at this stage", he added.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, respective first and second seeds in the Association of Tennis Professionals men's event, were also waiting to play their matches against Canada's Denis Shapovalov and Jeremy Chardy of France.

When in Rome-at least on Thursday, May 16, 2019-you schedule 55 ATP and WTA matches, in singles and doubles, beginning at 10:00 A.M. local time and lasting until God knows when.

"I have other problems first getting there", said Federer, who could meet the Spaniard in the semi-finals. "My excitement couldn't be bigger". Sousa has looked in good form and Federer has struggled on clay but I still see the Swiss master being too strong. Speaking yesterday in Rome, Federer seemed to say that the young guys will have this to gain more experience, then next year they will make their move. He's a champion of the sport, one of the greatest we'll ever see.

"Especially for the clay-courters".
