President Trump grants full pardon to former media mogul Conrad Black”

Black served almost 42 months in prison after he was convicted.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday granted a full pardon to Conrad Black, a former newspaper publisher who has written a flattering political biography of Trump.

Black, 74, was convicted of fraud and obstructing justice in 2007 and jailed for more than three years in the US.

However, the pressure from shareholders would ultimately lead to a probe by an internal committee of directors, followed by investigations of Black's businesses by the U.S. Securities Commission and the Department of Justice, which culminated in criminal charges of fraud and obstruction of justice against him. Last year, he also authored "Donald J. Trump: A President Like No Other", in what turned out to be a glowing endorsement of Trump.

Black's media empire once included the Chicago Sun-Times, the Jerusalem Post and The Daily Telegraph of London.

Trial watchers also knew that Trump had spoken up for Black at Hollinger International's annual shareholders meeting in 2003 in NY, where the media mogul was facing down increasingly agitated investors who were upset by large yet opaque management fees paid to Black and a few associates at a Toronto-based parent company.

The former media mogul was convicted of defrauding investors. He then pursued a partially successful appeal, in which a judge cut his sentence down to 42 months. "These include comprehensive biographies of Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Richard M. Nixon, a complete history of Canada, and an impressive essay evaluating how the world would have been different had Japan not attacked Pearl Harbor" the statement continued.

It also cites several prominent individuals whom it says "have vigorously vouched for [Black's] exceptional character".

It goes on to describe how Nolan ended up advocating for criminal justice reform, specifically the "Prison Rape Elimination Act", the "Second Chance Act", the "Fair Sentencing Act", and the "FIRST Step Act".

Sanders said Nolan wrote a guide for churches and community groups to help prisoners return to their communities.
