Uber has a solution for chatty drivers”

Quiet mode is one of the new preferences available beginning Tuesday evening across the us for premium Uber rides, which means only Uber Black or Uber Black SUV rides. As of May 15, riders who use this option can also let drivers know their conversation and temperature preferences, as well as if they need a hand with their luggage or a bit more time to be picked up.

The features are rolling out as part of Uber's new list of 'ride preferences, ' which are expanded controls that are only available during premium rides. Originally founded as a luxury auto service that could be booked through a smartphone app, Uber later introduced low-priced options like Uber Pool. This is the first time the option has been available on the Uber app.

Uber isn't the only ride-sharing app that's looked into adding 'Quiet Mode'.

Whenever I get in an Uber and the driver starts asking me these sorts of questions, my blood pressure automatically begins to rise.

Riders have been clamoring for a "quiet mode" for when you don't want to chat. "I don't want to tell strangers picking me up from the internet personal things about myself", one rider wrote on Twitter earlier this month.

Starting today, Uber Black and Uber Black SUV drivers in dozens of USA cities (full list here) will have to come into compliance with new company rules to ensure a consistent experience across the service.

Other updates include letting riders specify their preferred temperature (a cool breeze from the air-con, maybe) and ask in advance for help loading their luggage into the vehicle.

Uber has also stated that they will now require drivers to have much nicer and newer cars for new drivers signing up to qualify as Uber Black drivers.

'With these new features and more to come, we're excited to ensure that our riders can arrive relaxed and refreshed, wherever they're headed'.

Uber was launched in March 2009 in San Francisco, CA.
