Blazers honor coach who foiled armed student”

Former University of OR football star Keanon Lowe said he had just entered a classroom at the Portland high school where he works as a coach and security guard when a student armed with a black shotgun appeared in the doorway.

"I lunged for the gun and we both had the gun, we had four hands on the gun", Lowe recalled.

Lowe said he managed to pass the gun off to another teacher even as he held Granados-Diaz down in a bear hug until police arrived.

"I'm just happy everyone was OK", Lowe said as he walked out of the school after the incident, according to The Oregonian.

Just before noon Friday, a Parkrose High School student, identified by police as 18-year-old Angel Granados Dias, made his way to a classroom with a loaded shotgun.

You might not remember Lowe on the field, who was named OR football's Most Inspirational Player by his teammates that same year, but you'll definitely remember him for the lives he saved at Parkrose High School. "A lot of times, especially when you're young, you don't realize what you're doing until it's over", Lowe said.

Granados-Diaz turned 19 in jail on Monday, the same day students at Parkrose High returned to class after an emotional weekend that included their prom. In that time, I felt compassion for him.

Angel Granados Diaz, 19, faces two counts of possessing a firearm inside a public building, one count of being in possession of a loaded firearm in public, and one count of recklessly endangering. His public defender declined to offer comment about the situation. He said school security personnel were responding to those concerns and trying to locate Diaz when he arrived at the classroom. He was being held on $500,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in Multnomah County Circuit Court on Monday.

According to Lowe, he was initially called to go to a classroom in the fine arts building to get another student. Senior Alexa Pope, 17, who was in the class, told the outlet that some students began to run. "I'm happy I was able to be there for the kids and for the community". "I had no idea, that I would one day have to put my life on the line like I did yesterday for my students". "I'm lucky in that way".

Parkrose High School was placed on lockdown for over two hours after the incident.

Keanon Lowe, a former star wide receiver for the University of OR, described to "Good Morning America" what was one of the important tackles of his life.

The three-year starter at the University of OR caught 68 passes 891 yards and nine touchdowns during his career.

The football coach also works as a security guard at the school as well. Before that, he worked for his high school alma mater, Jesuit High, where he earned state defensive player of the year as a defensive back and was a standout sprinter.

Portland Police Chief Danielle Outlaw said incidents like this strike "the worst fear in the hearts of students and parents".

He is a student at Parkrose High School, where he brought the shotgun Friday, authorities said. There were no other suspects.
