Director Bong Joon Ho's new movie "Parasite" has just made Korean film history!

The jury headed by Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu awarded the Grand Prix, the festival's runners-up prize, to first-time director Mati Diop's Atlantique, an individualistic take on life's struggles in Senegal, Atlantique. Im Kwon-taek took the best director award for "Chihwaseon" in 2002, Park Chan-wook earned one twice with "Old Boy" (2004) and "Thirst" (2009) and Lee Chang-dong picked up the best screenplay award with "Poetry" in 2010.

"The best is still to come", said Banderas, accepting the award.

Bong Joon-Ho poses during a photocall with his trophy after he won the Palme d'Or for the film "Parasite (Gisaengchung)" during the closing ceremony of the 72nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, southern France.

Elle Fanning, the youngest juror ever at the Cannes Film Festival, said she's been transformed by her experience at the French festival. I myself found myself thinking that I liked it a fraction less than Bong's other films, and other films in this Competition, but there is no doubt that it is an outstanding film.

Best Director went to Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for "Young Ahmed".

The jury prize, or third place, was split between two socially conscious thrillers: The French director Ladj Ly's feature-film debut Les Misérables and Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho's Bacurau.

British actress Emily Beecham won best actress for her performance in Jessica Hausner's science-fiction drama Little Joe.

Palestinian director Elia Suleiman's It Must Be Heaven won a special mention from Inarritu's jury.

Model Bella Hadid poses for photographers at the photo call for the film Pain and Glory at the 72nd worldwide film festival. He is best known for his dramatic films "Snowpiercer" and "Okja". It had to contend, most formidably, with the cultural force of "Game of Thrones", which concluded during the festival. Netflix has since withdrawn from the festival. The 21-film main slate included four films directed by women, which tied the festival's previous high.
