Ladybugs 'bloom' cloud shows up on California weather radar”

Despite a massive green mass spotted north of San Diego on the National Weather Service's radar, there was no downpour in Southern California Tuesday evening.

Things got stranger when they consulted with spotters on the ground, the Los Angeles Times reports: The blob, estimated at about 80 miles by 80 miles and moving quickly across San Bernardino County, was actually an enormous swarm, or bloom, of ladybugs.

Joe Dandrea, a meteorologist at NWS Forecast Office San Diego, told the Los Angeles Times that the bloom covered about 128 square kilometres, but said the lady bugs were not all bunched together - most were flying at different altitudes between 5,000 and 9,000 feet.

"The observer there said you could see little specks flying by".

Tardy said the service observed the echo that grew to cover all of western Riverside County, all the way down to Temecula.

Ladybugs, one of the few insects that don't cause us to automatically wretch in disgust, will make good overlords once they land and choose their capital city. In early spring, once temperatures reach 65 degrees Fahrenheit, adult ladybugs mate and migrate from the Sierra Nevada mountain range to valley floors, where they eat and lay eggs.

In the early summer, once the aphid numbers decline, beetles become hungry and migrate to higher elevations, according to the UC programme.
