Actor and playwright Girish Karnad dies at 81”

Multilingual actor and playwright Girish Karnad has passed away at his residence on Lavelle road in Bengaluru on Monday, 10 June.

Other acclaimed plays written by him include "Tughlaq" (1964), "Hayavadana" (1972).

Karnad first tasted success by writing plays in his native tongue Kannada, which he later went on to translate in English as well. The thirteen-scene play is set during the reign of Muhammad bin Tughlaq. Moreover, in the year 1998, he was bestowed with Jnanpith Award which is the highest literary honour conferred in India.

Also a Padma Bhusan recipient, he made his screenwriting debut back in 1970 Kannada film Samskara.

He was conferred the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India and has won four Filmfare Awards, of which three are Filmfare Award for Best Director - Kannada and the fourth a Filmfare Best Screenplay Award. During this period Karnad continued to produce work as a playwright, including Hayavadana (1971), widely acclaimed as among the most important plays of post-independence India. Some of his famous Kannada films are "Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane", "Ondanondu Kaladalli", "Cheluvi", "Kaadu" and "Kanooru Heggaditi". He also worked in Hindi films. In the 1990s, he hosted the science magazine Turning Point on Doordarshan.

Even as he aged, he continued to make public appearances at panel discussions and literature festivals to discuss his work.

He is survived by his wife Saraswathi, son Raghu Karnad, a journalist and writer and daughter Radha, a doctor based in Kenya.

Girish Karnad was born in Matheran, Maharashtra, on 19 May, 1938.

He completed his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Mathematics and Statistics from Karnatak Arts College, Dharwad, in 1958.
