Iran: will cooperate with European Union signatories of 2015 nuclear deal

Iran: will cooperate with European Union signatories of 2015 nuclear deal”

"Tehran will cooperate with European Union signatories of the deal to save it", Zarif said.

Iran has criticised the European signatories of its 2015 nuclear deal for failing to salvage the pact after Trump pulled the U.S. out.

Germany's foreign minister arrived in Tehran on Sunday to hold talks the next day with President Hassan Rouhani as part of a concerted Western effort to preserve Iran's nuclear pact with world powers and defuse rising US-Iranian tensions.

Those who struck the deal at the time described it as a building block toward further negotiations with Iran, whose Islamic government has had a tense relationship with America since the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran and subsequent hostage crisis.

Iran has rejected France's call for broader worldwide talks on its nuclear program and military ambitions, yesterday announcing that it will discuss only the 2015 agreement with global powers.

Tensions between Iran and the United States have been simmering since Washington chose to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal in May 2018 and reinstated all sanctions against the Islamic Republic. No nuclear weapons for Iran.

Earlier, the US Treasury Department imposed new Iran-related sanctions, targeting the country's petrochemical sector, which includes a petrochemical holding with a vast network of subsidiaries and sales agents. "We will halt our commitments or will take action in accordance with their measures", he said.

On a weekend stopover in Iraq en route to Tehran, Maas warned of the dangers that conflict with Iran posed for the entire Middle East, saying the Europeans were convinced it was worth trying to keep the nuclear pact with Iran.

Maas said it was important to continue dialogue with Iran and use those talks also for frank discussions.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani on Sunday criticised French President Emmanuel Macron for saying last week in a meeting with Mr Trump that they shared the same objectives on Iran. "(Then) reduce ballistic activity and contain Iran regionally".

Maas coordinated his trip with France and Britain, and also discussed it with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Iran's foreign minister warned the United States on Monday that it "cannot expect to stay safe" after launching what he described as an economic war against Tehran, taking a hard-line stance amid a visit by Germany's top diplomat seeking to defuse tensions.

However, the visit by Japan's leader "faces substantial obstacles and is unlikely to bear fruit", Tobias Harris, an analyst at Teneo consultancy group, told AFP news agency.
