Jussie Smollett returns to Instagram with Pride month message

Jussie Smollett has returned to social media, sharing his first Instagram post since January when he alleged he'd been the victim of a hate crime - a claim Chicago cops later accused him of faking following an extensive investigation.

The embattled "Empire" actor on Monday shared a video of a speech given during Sunday's Tony Awards by "Choir Boy" playwright Tarrell Alvin McCraney. Instead, he ceded the floor to Tarell Alvin McCraney, the Oscar-winning playwright and screenwriter of Choir Boy, Steven Soderbergh's High Flying Bird, and the play that inspired the film Moonlight, for which he also co-wrote the screenplay.

Smollett had attended the play's opening night earlier this year. He would turn off his comments with followers only able to like and view the post.

Until Monday, Smollett, 36, had remained quiet on Instagram since the day before he claimed to the Chicago Police Department that he was jumped on a desolate city street by a pair of masked men yelling racist and homophobic slurs.

Smollett was later charged with multiple felony counts after Chicago police say he staged the attack against himself.

Smollett has maintained his innocence and did not pay the city by the deadline he was given.

Smollett captioned the video, 'So much pride, ' along with two prayer emojis. His return to social media comes a week after creator Lee Daniels revealed that Smollett would not be reprising his role as Jamal Lyon on the series' upcoming sixth and final season.
