Apple's US iPhones can be made outside of China if needed

Apple's US iPhones can be made outside of China if needed”

Shares in Foxconn, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, have dropped around 20% since Gou announced in April his plans to run for president.

"Twenty-five percent of our production capacity is outside of China and we can help Apple respond to its needs in the USA market", Liu noted.

Apple's iPhone could escape Donald Trump's escalating trade war with China.

Huawei is the most obvious victim of trade tensions between the U.S. and China that are showing little signs of de-escalation, but directly or indirectly, Apple's lucrative smartphone business could also be negatively impacted by this whole unstable and unpredictable political kerfuffle.

Hon Hai, the largest listed arm of Foxconn Technology Group, is establishing a body of nine executives who will represent its top decision-making unit after the board, the company said in exchange filings, confirming a previous report from Bloomberg News.

Apple shares were up more than 1 per cent to US$194.99 in NY on Tuesday.

Apple is reportedly prepared if the US-China trade war forces it to move production outside China. If Foxconn freed up non-China production capacity for iPhones, other smartphone clients could find their orders temporarily delayed or sidelined in the short-term, he added. But without that, some of its Chinese factories may be idled. With ongoing US Trade War with China, the Cupertino tech giant seems to have a contingency plan if the things go unfavorable as a result of the trade war. Foxconn is now running quality tests for the iPhone Xr series there and plans to begin mass production at a facility in the suburbs of Chennai.

Liu was speaking at Foxconn's first investor conference in Taipei, where the company also said it was well positioned to tackle the "increasingly tough" trade war situation with its production lines across 16 countries.

The company has also promised to invest billions in a new United States manufacturing hub in Wisconsin, although the base is unlikely to produce iPhones. Hailed by Trump as "one of the great deals ever", the project has since come under criticism for low-paying jobs, sudden dismissals and ever-changing goals.

Liu said the Wisconsin investment, which is expected to reach $1.4-1.5 billion with up to 2,000 employees by end of 2020, was on schedule.
