Congo’s Ebola outbreak spreading with first case confirmed in Uganda

Congo’s Ebola outbreak spreading with first case confirmed in Uganda”

The health agency said in a statement on Tuesday that the boy had travelled with family from the DRC to Uganda on June 9.

The Ebola virus that has stubbornly lingered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since August 2018 has finally jumped the border, sickening a 5-year-old boy in Uganda.

The announcement puts new pressure on the World Health Organization to declare the Ebola outbreak - the second-deadliest in history - a global health emergency. But worldwide spread is one of the major criteria the United Nations agency considers before such a declaration.

The family had crossed the border seeking medical care at a local hospital, and Ebola was identified as a possible source of the boy's symptoms.

Confirmation of Ebola was made on Tuesday by the Uganda Virus Institute.

The health ministry revealed the measles figure when it declared the epidemic on Monday.

While health officials have focused on the far deadlier hemorrhagic Ebola virus concentrated in DRC's east, some 87,000 suspected cases of measles have been reported across the vast central African country in the first four and a half months of this year.

For the first time an experimental but effective Ebola vaccine is being widely used, with more than 130,000 doses distributed.

Noncontact thermometers allow health workers to check the temperature of people from Congo at the Ebola screening point in western Uganda. Health workers have been trained to recognize the disease, and almost 4,700 health care workers in 165 health facilities have been vaccinated against the disease with an experimental inoculation that has been effective at preventing widespread transmission in Congo.

As the number of cases has increased, so has the concern that the infectious disease would cross the border.
