David Ortiz alert, smiling after second surgery in Boston

David Ortiz alert, smiling after second surgery in Boston”

The former Boston Red Sox slugger underwent a second operation at Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital overnight after being flown from the Dominican Republic on Monday.

Fans hold up signs showing support for former Red Sox player David Ortiz prior to the start of the game against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park on June 10, 2019 in Boston, Massachusetts.

The 10-time All-Star underwent another surgery on Monday and is now recovering in the ICU, where he'll remain for several days. Doctors removed his gallbladder and part of his colon and intestines.

ESPN joins the chorus of other well-wishers hoping David Ortiz makes a speedy recovery.

Authorities said Ortiz was ambushed by a man who got off a motorcycle and shot Ortiz in the back at almost point-blank range around 8:50 p.m. local time at the Dial Bar and Lounge.

Police said Ortiz was shot at almost point-blank range by a man identified as Eddy Feliz Garcia, 25.

Ortiz had been listed in stable condition in the intensive care unit of a Dominican Republic hospital earlier Monday following surgery for gunshot wounds.

The shooting prompted Ortiz to reportedly plead with the emergency room doctor "Please don't let me die, I'm a good man".

Ortiz played for the Red Sox from 2004-16 and won the World Series with Boston in 2004, 2007 and 2013. "That collaboration with Dominican journalists, and well as Enrique's close relationship with David's father, Leo Ortiz, has been essential to our reporting". A crowd of people managed to pull the driver off the motorcycle and beat him before police arrived. "We ask for privacy as David works towards recovery". He was treated at the Dario Contreras Hospital in Santo Domingo before being released to police custody.

Jhoel López, a TV host in the Dominican Republic, was speaking to Ortiz at the bar when the shooting broke out and was also injured, according to The Associated Press.

Ortiz, who starred for the Boston Red Sox for 14 seasons before retiring in 2016, underwent surgery at the Abel Gonzalez clinic.

The Red Sox arranged for an air ambulance to transport Ortiz from the Dominican Republic to Boston.
