Concern Grows As Another US Tourist Dies In Dominican Republic

Concern Grows As Another US Tourist Dies In Dominican Republic”

The family has yet to learn what his cause of death is, his niece said.

Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is a popular vacation spot among American tourists.

"The safety of U.S. citizens that live in, work in, and visit the Dominican Republic remains our highest priority", Robin Bernstein, the U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, said in a statement to ABC News.

They had checked in on the same day that 41-year-old Pennsylvania woman Miranda Schaup-Werner collapsed and died after drinking from the minibar at the same resort on May 25, the New York Post reported. "He and his wife arrived there at around midnight on April 10".

A couple, Cynthia Day, 49, and Edward Holmes, 63, stayed in the next door hotel, Grand Bahia Principe La Romana and were both found dead on May 30 in their room by hotel staff. The 67-year-old, who owned a construction business, had reportedly taken a scotch from the room's minibar before he became nauseous.

Arnold said her uncle, an avid traveler, had been in relatively good health and just the month before had been skiing in Lake Tahoe. "He started feeling very sick, he had blood in his urine and stool right afterward".

Thousands of miles from home, Wallace became the first of four American tourists and one of two staying at the Hard Rock Hotel to die while vacationing at Dominican resorts and possibly partaking of minibar liquor. Wallace was in DR to attend his stepson's wedding.

"We have so many questions", she said.

"We want these tests and investigation to be carried out carefully and professionally". "These incidents are tragic and we offer our deepest condolences to those personally impacted".

Families said the three died of pulmonary edema and respiratory failure. "Out of respect for the family during this hard time, we do not have additional information to provide".

Although there are similarities in the rash of deaths - most are described as happening suddenly, and several after an alcoholic drink - federal officials have not determined whether there is any connection between any of the deaths. In a June 7 statement, the Bahia Principe said it has a "firm commitment to collaborate completely with the authorities and hope for a prompt resolution". Her obituary simply states she died suddenly on June 23, 2018 while in the Dominican Republic.

According to autopsy results released by the Attorney General of the Dominican Republic, she died of a heart attack that caused respiratory failure and fluid accumulation in her lungs.

"At this time, we have no indication of any connection between those tragic losses and the cases now under investigation", Bernstein said.

Those three deaths made headlines and put a spotlight on what now appears to be a yearlong pattern, according to the New York Post. This story was reported from Oakland, Calif.
