Patriots Acquire Tight End Michael Roberts In Trade With Lions”

The Patriots acquired Roberts from the Lions on Thursday for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2020, the Detroit News reported.

The Patriots and Lions have sent a number of players back and forth, with Lions General Manager Bob Quinn tapping into his connections in New England to trade players and picks often.

Roberts is a third-year tight end who caught nine passes for 100 yards and three touchdown last year over an injury-shortened season.

A fourth-round pick in 2017, Roberts owned the size and red-zone production in college to project as a potential TD weapon. As a rookie Roberts had just four catches for 46 yards in 15 games, and was held out of the Lions' finale by then-coach Jim Caldwell for reportedly skipping a team meeting. He played in eight games past year before a shoulder injury ended his campaign prematurely.

In the last couple of weeks the Patriots learned that they'd be without Benjamin Watson for the first four games of the season and then chose to release Austin Seferian-Jenkins as he deals with a personal issue.

Roberts adds another question mark to the Patriots' tight end puzzle after Gronkowski's retirement.

But with Watson suspended for the first four weeks of the season, Roberts has an opportunity to join LaCosse on the opening day roster.
