Huawei: UK warned over sending ‘bad signal’ to China”

Two leading U.S. senators warned President Donald Trump's administration on Thursday (June 13) not to use Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei's access to the USA market as a negotiating tool in trade talks with Beijing.

Huawei, founded in 1987 by a former engineer in China's People's Liberation Army, denies it spies for Beijing, says it complies with the law and that the United States is trying to smear it because Western companies are falling behind.

Similarly, BBC reports that China's ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming has warned the government of grave outcome should Huawei be blocked from taking part in Britain's 5G network.

Huawei has denied the charges and is now trying to reverse the ban in United States courts, arguing that a law that bans government purchases from the Chinese telecoms firm is unconstitutional.

A decision was made to restrict Huawei from core parts of the 5G network but allow limited access to non-core parts by Britain's National Security Council, now chaired by Prime Minister Theresa May, who hosted a meeting to discuss the Huawei issue in April.

The United States has severely limited Huawei's access to the U.S. market and US-made technology over the past two years amid fears that its equipment, especially that for the coming next-generation 5G wireless markets, could offer Chinese intelligence services a back door to USA communications.

"Because those decisions have been made by the USA relatively recently that means we have to take a step back and think carefully about them before we make our final decision", Digital Minister Jeremy Wright told reporters.

On May 23, Trump suggested that Huawei's status could be part of his negotiations with China on resolving a grinding trade battle.

"They are all factors to be considered and we are considering them".

A final decision by the British cabinet of senior ministers was due to have happened in recent weeks but May's pledge to step down as prime minister has stalled the process, sources said.
