Trump eyes former immigration official as his border czar”

President Donald Trump made a surprise announcement that Fox News contributor, and former Acting ICE Director, Tom Homan will be rejoining his administration during a marathon phone interview Friday morning with Fox & Friends.

Lopez Obrador said on Friday that officials will tighten security at 68 border crossings where controls are lax.

"He'll be a border czar, he'll be very much involved with the border, he'll be reporting directly to me, he'll be probably be working out of the White House but probably spending a lot of time at the border", Trump said. The head of Mexico's National Migration Institute, Tonatiuh Guillen, resigned on Friday for "personal reasons", an interior ministry official said.

Most are coming from Central American countries where they are fleeing extreme poverty, unemployment, violence, political persecution.

The number of migrants taken into custody by immigration agencies at the southern border has risen dramatically in past months, reaching more than 140,000 in May and causing severe overcrowding at immigration detention facilities.

The United States has doubled the number of asylum seekers it sends back each day to Mexico from El Paso, Texas, a Mexican immigration official said on Friday, in the first sign of action following a deal struck to avert US tariffs last week.

Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the National Guard will be deployed on Tuesday along with 825 immigration agents and 200 officials from the country's welfare department.

Remain in Mexico now operates in Tijuana, Mexicali and Ciudad Juarez.

"Mexico also commits to immediately begin examining domestic laws and regulations with a view to identifying any changes that may be necessary to bring into force and implement such an agreement", it says.

Trump said he had meant to make the announcement next week, "but I'd rather announce it now".

If enforcement measures are not successful after 45 days, Mexico has also agreed to consider making itself a "safe third country".
