Labrie was a member of the Royal Canadian parachute squadron based out of Garrison Petawawa near Ottawa.

Minister of National Defense Harjit Sajjan offered his condolences to the family and comrades of Labrie, saying the loss is a being felt across the Canadian Armed Forces.

The incident happened Monday evening near the Bulgarian village of Cheshnegirovo, and is under investigation by Canadian military police, the department said. He identified the soldier as Bombardier Patrick Labrie. Jean-Marc Lanthier said in a statement.

Exercise SWIFT RESPONSE 19 is a multinational airborne training exercise taking place from June 8 to 27 in various locations throughout Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania.

It involves around 5,600 personnel from eight countries, including 1,495 parachutists, the Defence Ministry in Sofia said.
