Caged 'attack squirrel' fed meth by Alabama man: Cops

Caged 'attack squirrel' fed meth by Alabama man: Cops”

Game and Fish confirmed that it is illegal to have a pet squirrel, and they recommended releasing the squirrel, which deputies did successfully.

The suspect was not there, though another man was arrested on drug charges.

Since Mickey Paulk's Athens apartment was searched on Monday morning, the caged squirrel has been released into the wild, Limestone County Sheriff's Office's Public Information Officer Stephen Young confirms to PEOPLE.

Officials said that before searching 35-year-old Mickey Paulk's apartment, they were told that Paulk had an "attack squirrel" in the home and fed the animal meth to make it aggressive.

The Limestone County Sheriff's Office said Ronnie Reynolds, 37, was arrested during the search.

Animal Control officials were called to the apartment, and they, in turn, contacted officials with the Alabama Game and Fish Division of the Department of Conservation.

Court documents show Paulk has a long rap sheet of charges in Limestone County, and he's served time in the Limestone County Correctional Facility.

Authorities were unable to safely test the squirrel for drugs. Investigators found meth, drug paraphernalia, body armor, ammunition, and the squirrel in the residence.

A man who is accused of keeping an "attack squirrel" locked in cage and feeding it methamphetamine so it stays aggressive has appeared on video denying the allegations while holding what he claims is the same animal.

After Alabama's "attack squirrel" was introduced to the world in news reports about its rescue during a recent methamphetamine bust, the Internet took notice.
