How much money did Gary Woodland win at the 2019 US Open?”

Gary Woodland secured his first major title at Pebble Beach on Sunday, winning the U.S. Open by three strokes from Koepka.

On Sunday he'll try to make it a fifth as he's in contention yet again at the U.S. Open, a tournament in which he's the two-time defending champion.

There were still challenges to navigate over the final four holes - notably when he had to chip from one side of a "figure 8" green to the other - but Woodland would not be deterred.

Woodland carded a final round of 69 at Pebble Beach to finish 13 under par and three shots clear of Koepka, who had threatened to become just the second player to win three straight US Opens and claim an fantastic fifth major victory in his last nine starts. He raised both arms in the air to salute the crowd, turned toward the Pacific and slammed down his fist.

"I think from a golf standpoint I've always been a little behind just from what you're talking about, guys that have grown up doing this their whole life", Woodland said.

Koepka had to settle for a footnote in history.

McIlroy, who went into the Pebble Beach major after firing a final-round 61 to win last week's Canadian Open, now will focus his attention on his preparations for The Open Championship at Royal Portrush in his native Northern Ireland.

Though he was unable to match Scottish-born Willie Anderson, who won his first U.S. Open in 1901 and then reeled off three straight victories in "03, '04 and '05, Koepka has established himself as the 'one to beat" in men's golf. He then held onto the lead after Saturday's round three.

"The idea was to play to win", Woodland said. "I could have laid up".

"That birdie kind of separated me a little bit". Paul Azinger tipped Justin Rose (one shot back before the final round) to get the job done, Rory McIlroy (five back) knew he needed a fast start and just about everyone else was looking out for Koepka.

Even more significant was a shot from 90 feet. The world number one was matched at [2.4] when he found the fairway on the short par five sixth but he made a mess of his second stroke and only made par, missed a seven-footer for birdie at seven and bogeyed eight. Woodland, unable to hit putter and get anywhere near the hole, opted to pitch it. He clipped it perfectly just over the hump, and it checked about 12 feet from the hole and trickled out to tap-in range.

Matt Wallace was my sole selection at [44.0] when he won the BMW International Open past year and I was also on board Bubba Watson at the Travelers Championship at [34.0] before the get-go too.

That effectively ended the U.S. Open. A choice to be bold in the big moment he dreamed of.

This year, a video of his one-hole journey with a young Special Olympian Amy Bockersette at the iconic Par-16th at the Waste Management went viral with nearly 20 million people appreciating the gesture.

"I hope that my practice rounds are such that we get different winds, especially on a golf course that I've never played, to get a different feel how it could play for the week".

That courage and message has remained with Woodland as if it were tattooed on his forearm.

A maiden major now within his grasp, a relaxed Woodland capped off his round in spectacular style, rolling in a 30-foot birdie at the last to trigger a standing ovation and chants of "Gary, Gary". That put him at 3 under and tied for 16th. The pin position on 12 meant par was a really good score and he was far from the only player to make a four there. Gary played a great four days. Seventeen birdies against four bogeys was how the log book read.
