Marta makes World Cup history

Marta makes World Cup history”

The striker scored her 17th goal across five World Cup tournaments to overturn Germany forward Miroslav Klose's 16-goal record in the men's version.

The goal came from the penalty spot 74 minutes into Tuesday's group stage clash with Italy, which Brazil ended up winning 1-0 behind the Marta goal. Brazil is moving on to the knockout rounds, and so Marta will have more opportunities to extend her record.

Brazil great Marta put her name in the record books once again, scoring from the penalty spot against Italy to become the most prolific scorer in World Cup finals history.

The 33-year-old forward, who is the only footballer to score at five different World Cup editions, has scored 112 total goals in 145 appearances for Brazil.

Tuesday's results mean Italy, Brazil and Australia qualify for the knockout stages while Jamaica - the first Caribbean country to play in the Women's World Cup - fail to progress after three defeats in three matches. The United States' Abby Wambach and Germany's Birgit Prinz are tied for second among women with 14 each.

Australia finished second despite having the same goal difference as Brazil, with the Aussies' 3-2 win over Brazil last week nudging them ahead of their South American counterparts.

Marta, a six-time FIFA Player of the Year and widely regarded as the greatest female to have played the game, celebrated by kissing her boot.

Jamaica's pressure continued to grow throughout the second-half but it was Australia who had the ball in the back of the net next, with Kerr completing her hat-trick from close range.
