New York OKs driving licenses for undocumented migrants”

Instead, a statement came from Underwood's boss, Attorney General Letitia James, seen broadly as a Cuomo ally.

"In a time when immigrants' rights and livelihoods are being severely threatened, the Green Light Bill is a clear message that we New Yorkers will always choose to lead with courage and love and to fight for everyone's right to the American Dream", Sepúlveda said.

Immigrants and community leaders protest the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) policies that deny driver's licenses and state ID's to hundreds of thousands of immigrant New Yorkers April 13, 2004 in front of the DMV on 34th Street in New York City.

The Senate approved the Green Light Bill with 33 votes to 29, and the result was met with cheers and shouts from the gallery.

It is constitutional & the bill contains ample protections for those who apply for driver's licenses. "If this bill is enacted and challenged in court, we will vigorously defend it", James said, according to the Post.

On Monday, the New York Senate passed the "Green Light Bill", which is created to give undocumented immigrants the right to a driver's license.

Before 2001, undocumented residents in NY could get driver's licenses if they passed the required tests. Eliot Spitzer's proposal to rescind Gov. George Pataki's order that driver's licenses require Social Security numbers, made after the September 11 attacks.

Sen. Sepulveda said the legislation is mainly "for the children".

"The Attorney General stated that she believes there are "safeguards" in the bill, and it can be defended; in other words, it cannot be weaponized to be used against undocumented individuals", stated Alphonso David, counsel to the governor's office.

"It's been an 18-year struggle", said Javier Valdés, the co-executive director of Make the Road New York, a prominent political advocacy group that works to expand the privileges afforded to immigrants regardless of their legal status. "There is no credible case against this bill for immigrants rights reasons, which is why our movement is united in support".

"Following countless meetings with stakeholders, residents and advocates on the implications of this bill, our vote is based on the continued existence of serious concerns raised by stakeholders and law enforcement", the lawmakers said in a statement after the vote.
