Acting U.S. defense chief Patrick Shanahan has chose to withdraw his nomination as Secretary of Defense, . after serving as the Pentagon's acting chief since the turn of the year.

"Based upon his outstanding service to the country and his demonstrated ability to lead, President Trump intends to nominate Patrick M. Shanahan to be the Secretary of Defense", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement at the time.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says "this Shanahan fiasco shows what a shambles, what a mess" the administration's national security policy is.

The assault charge was a misdemeanour for domestic violence in August 2010 when, according to police records, she hit Mr Shanahan a number of times, giving him a bloody nose and black eye.

In a statement announcing his resignation, Mr Shanahan called it "unfortunate that a painful and deeply personal family situation from long ago is being dredged up and painted in an incomplete and therefore misleading way". "Ultimately, their safety and well-being is my highest priority".

Trump tweeted Tuesday that Shanahan had done "a wonderful job" but would step aside to "devote more time to his family".

Esper has served as the U.S. Army Secretary since November, 2017, . responsible for recruitment, training and care of soldiers on duty.

But as a result of that situation, Shanahan said, he asked to be withdrawn from the nomination process and he resigned from his previous post as deputy defense secretary.

Acting US Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan has abandoned his quest for the top Pentagon job after reports of domestic violence in his family have emerged, plunging the leadership of the US military into new uncertainty just as tensions with Iran are rising. He said he would work on an "appropriate transition" but it wasn't clear how quickly he will leave the job.

Minutes after Mr Trump's announcement, the Washington Post published an interview with Mr Shanahan in which he discussed a 2011 incident when his son, then 17, reportedly beat his mother with a baseball bat fracturing her skull.

Hours after naming Secretary of the Army Mark Esper to replace Mr Shanahan as Acting Secretary, Mr Trump told reporters he would likely nominate the former Raytheon executive and army veteran to the defence secretary position.

Trump appointed Shanahan, a former Boeing executive, to acting secretary last December after James Mattis stepped down.

In Shanahan's tenure at the department he's had to deal with a wide array of worldwide hotspots, ranging from missile launches by North Korea to the sudden shift of military ships and aircraft to the Middle East to deal with potential threats from Iran.
