Trump says Central Park Five 'admitted guilt,' won't apologize

President Donald Trump on Tuesday suggested that the innocence of Central Park Five - long exonerated for their involvement in the 1989 rape of a Central Park jogger, for which they received a combined decades in prison - may still be in dispute.

Trump responded, "You have people on both sides of that".

"It's an interesting time to bring it up", he observed.

For those of you who need a recap, Trump purchased a front-page ad that appeared on numerous NYC newspapers which read, "Bring Back The Death Penalty. They admitted their guilt", Trump told Ryan.

"If you look at Linda Fairstein and look at some of the prosecutors", he continued, "they think that the city should never have settled that case. We'll leave it at that", Trump said. "They admitted their guilt", he said.

The five black and Hispanic men were teenagers when they were convicted. The city of NY made a $41 million dollar settlement with the men for the ordeal, and the case has largely been seen as an indictment of institutional racism in the criminal justice system.

A Netflix miniseries, "When They See Us", which premiered this month, renewed focus on the case and generated public outrage. Trump spent $85,000 placing ads in NYC papers calling for the teens' executions.

Years later, the men were exonerated by DNA evidence and another man's confession. "I am also in favor bringing back police forces that can do something instead of turning their back because every quality lawyer that represents people that are trouble, the first thing they do is start shouting police brutality, etc".

Since DuVernay's series was released, a number of officials involved in the prosecution have suffered significant backlash.
