Viktor Hovland tops Jack Nicklaus’ amateur record at US Open”

Viktor Hovland with the low amateur medal after the final round of the 2019 U.S. Open golf tournament at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Hovland became the first player since Matt Kuchar in 1998 to earn low amateur honors in the Masters and the U.S. Open in the same year.

The Norwegian also won the 2018 U.S. Amateur, the 2019 Ben Hogan Award for college golf's top player and a 2018 NCAA championship with Oklahoma State, so golf's amateur ranks are probably itching to see him go. He wound up with the best amateur performance ever at the US Open, and on an oceanfront course known for being hard. He did something else perhaps more impressive: His 4-under 280 total broke Jack Nicklaus' U.S. Open record for low score as an amateur in this event (282), which dated to 1960 at Cherry Hills in Denver, Colo. His last act as an amateur was a powerful one, though.

"I didn't know that", Hovland said with a laugh moments after the round while being interviewed by Fox Sports' Joel Klatt. "Pretty sweet", Hovland said when told about the accomplishment.

Hovland got off to a hot start on Sunday, going out in 31 with four birdies over his final six holes on the front nine, including one on the hard par-4 eighth, where he stuck his approach to two feet.

After a three-year stint on a golf scholarship at Oklahoma State University, he will make his pro debut at the PGA Tour's Travelers Championship in CT starting on Thursday. He finished five strokes ahead of No. 2 amateur Brandon Wu of Stanford. He will remain amateur this summer in hopes for a Walker Cup bid in September. "Really happy we got to go out like that". Duke senior Chandler Eaton (+5) and Michael Thorbjornsen (+20) rounded out the foursome.
