Last year, nine people in MI died from the virus or something related, and there were 104 serious illnesses.

Symptoms of the virus include high fever, confusion, muscle weakness and a severe headache.

Mosquitoes collected in Saginaw and Oakland counties, in addition to a Canada goose from Kalamazoo County, have all tested positive not too long ago for West Nile virus, based on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

The Ohio Department of Health urges folks to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and the threat of diseases carried by the insect. This can lead to more serious complications like meningitis and encephalitis.

Wearing shoes and socks, light colored long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors.

"Being aware of mosquito and mosquito-borne disease activity in your area allows you to take steps to protect yourself and others", reads an ODH press release. Adults over the age of 60 have the highest risk of contracting severe illnesses from West Nile.

Mosquitoes pick up the virus by feeding on an infected bird and then transmit it by biting you. Most people who contract the virus have no clinical symptoms of illness, but some may become ill three to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito.

The skeeters have landed and so far there has been one case of the West Nile Virus in MI with probably more to follow.

The virus tends to develop quicker when the temperatures warm up. These places are storm drains, shallow ditches, retention ponds, and unused pools or buckets that have been collecting water. Instead dress your child in clothing that covers arms and legs and cover crib, stroller and baby carrier with mosquito netting.

Making sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Fix or replace screens that have tears or other openings.
