Mark Field suspended as minister after grabbing activist

Mark Field suspended as minister after grabbing activist”

"The protester in question was hoping to discuss climate change and the economic reforms we need with the financiers and bankers at the dinner", said Areeba Hamid, Climate Campaigner for Greenpeace UK.

Prime Minister Theresa May made the decision to suspend him from his Foreign Office job after viewing footage of the incident, which she found "very concerning".

Fellow Tory MP Johnny Mercer has backed foreign officer minister Mark Field over an incident with a climate change activist, urging everyone to "calm down".

The Prime Minister's spokesperson said the Mansion House has said it is "looking into the breach of security that took place", adding: "We believe that it's right that they are reviewing security arrangements".

Damian Green told Nick Ferrari said he would leave it to the Cabinet Office to judge whether Mr Field faces any consequences for the incident, but said he was "glad" Mr Field apologised straight away.

"In the confusion many guests understandably felt threatened and when one protester rushed past me towards the top table I instinctively reacted", Field, who is Member of Parliament for Cities of London and Westminster, said in a statement to ITV.

However, Mr Field's claim that he was ' for a split second, genuinely anxious she might have been armed' does not stand up to serious scrutiny.

As a result I grasped the intruder firmly in order to remove her from the room as swiftly as possible.

She added: 'I'd quite like him to go on anger management, perhaps.

The Greenpeace activist involved in the altercation, Janet Barker, described Field's as "over the top".

"Violence against women is endemic in our society and this behavior is unacceptable", he said.

Mr Field's behaviour will be investigated by the propriety and ethics team in the department.

"In his interest and in the interest of the lady involved we need a proper [Cabinet Office] inquiry and that's what going to happen".

I think there's no reason to criticise Mark Field. Every MP has to deal with protest and conflict, it is done with words.

The protester is clutching leaflets and wearing a red dress with a sash that says "climate emergency".

The campaign group said the activists had wanted to deliver a speech on how the current system has failed.

The minister said the law should be applied "to its full extent against those who insist on protesting in this anti-social way".

City of London Police said they were looking into a "small number" of reports of an assault. However, people visiting Mansion House, where the event was held, are routinely scanned by detectors before being allowed to enter, and the Greenpeace protesters were committed to non-violence, leaving when police were called to the scene.
