Roger Federer primed for Wimbledon charge after sealing 10th Halle Open crown

Roger Federer primed for Wimbledon charge after sealing 10th Halle Open crown”

37-year-old Federer has struggled for rhythm throughout the competition, dropping sets to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Roberto Bautista Agut, but he clicked into gear when he started to dominate Goffin, breaking three times in the second set.

Only Rafael Nadal had previously achieved the feat in the Open era.

In a press conference in Halle, Roger Federer commented on Matteo Berrettini's progress.

It's also Federer's 102nd career title, moving him just seven behind Jimmy Connor's record of 109.

Federer broke quickly in the second set and did not allow Goffin back into the match, becoming become the oldest tour-level champion since a 43-year-old Ken Rosewall prevailed in Hong Kong in 1977. "I just thought match-for-match because the second round and quarters were so tough that I never really thought about how it would feel if I won and now it's reality", Federer said.

The Halle Open is a warm-up tournament for Wimbledon which begins on July 1.

Things got easier in the latter stages as he thrashed Andy Murray's new doubles partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the semi-finals before dispatching Goffin on Sunday.

There was little to separate the two men in the first set as neither player managed a single break of serve, though Goffin came closest at 2-2 after racing to a 0-40 lead in Federer's third service game.

Federer held off three break points early in the first set before prevailing in the tiebreaker.
