Australian children of IS militants rescued from Syria camp

Australian children of IS militants rescued from Syria camp”

"They have got off to a disgusting start in life as a result of the appalling decisions of their parents, and they'll find their home in Australia and I'm sure they'll be embraced by Australians", said Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Dozens of Australian women and children remain stranded in Syrian refugee camps.

The fate of foreign fighters and their families has become a significant problem for governments across the world following the collapse of ISIL's so-called caliphate, the last remnants of which crumbled earlier this year under pressure from US-backed fighters in eastern Syria.

Local media reported that the group included five children and grandchildren of Sydney-born convicted ISIL member Khaled Sharrouf and three children of fellow fighter Yasin Rizvic, from Melbourne.

Save the Children said it welcomes news of the Australian government working to repatriate the children.

The Australian said it had agreed to withhold details of the operation until the group was safely clear of the country because of the high level of risk involved.

Morrison said the decision to repatriate the children - who will be taken to Australia - was not taken lightly, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) officials had supported the efforts.

Their case had gained widespread attention after the grandmother of the Sharrouf children - 17-year-old heavily pregnant Zaynab, her younger sister Hoda, their eight-year-old brother Hamzeh, and Zaynab's two young children Ayesha, three, and Fatima, two - had pleaded with Canberra to bring them home.

"We commend the government's commitment to bring these children home", the organization's CEO Paul Ronalds said in a statement. They also joined ISIS in 2014.

Carroll said disengagement services, also known as deradicalization programs, were available in Australia to help the children integrate into the mainstream Australian community.

"I think we need to keep it very much in perspective".

Mat Tinkler, director of the Save the Children Fund charity, said there were at least 50 Australian women and children in Syrian refugee camps and all should be repatriated. "And for me and my children I want to live a normal life just like anyone would want to live a normal life".

Sharrouf grew to change into infamous for graphic shots he shared online from the warzone - together with of his younger kids with weapons and one defending a severed head. Her husband and two eldest sons later died in an airstrike.
