Hannah Green wins WPGA Championship to make Australian golf history

Hannah Green wins WPGA Championship to make Australian golf history”

But the Australian was cool as can be with putts, matching birdies with Jutanugarn on the par-3 fourth hole, and making a 40-foot putt for birdie on the fifth.

Hannah Green - unknown to many at the start of the week but the name on everybody's list at the end of it - now becomes the third Australian major victor.

Green had a short putt on the par-four 18th to win the title, and she holed out to seal her first major win.

Green is also just the third Australian woman to win a major, after seven-time victor Webb and three-time victor Jan Stephenson - both World Golf Hall of Fame members. Green is now one of nine players to achieve these two "firsts" at this Championship: Hannah Green/2019, Danielle Kang/2017, Shanshan Feng/2012, Anna Nordqvist/2009, Yani Tseng/2008, Se Ri Pak/1998, Sherri Turner/1988, Sandra Post/1968 and Gloria Ehret/1966. In doing so, Korda registered her best finish in a major championship and her second career top-10 in a major (T-10, 2018 U.S. Women's Open).

The 22-year-old said she couldn't believe she was in the position she had found herself in.

"I'm pretty excited, I haven't had much time to think about what's happened today".

That has since been corrected, but for those who follow the game closely in this part of the world Green has been a known entity since her teenage years.

In a growing trend Green becomes the third victor of the past five LPGA events to win their LPGA title.

"If you get a good night's sleep sitting on the lead going into the last day", Webb said, "then you're going to carry yourself really well".

With a victory at the Birmingham Classic, Barty became the first Australian woman to reach No.1 since her idol Evonne Goolagong Cawley did in 1976.

Reavie, the 2008 Canadian Open victor, finished at 17-under 263 at TPC River Highlands a week after tying for third in the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

She moved to 11-under with another birdie at the par-five seventh, as Jutanagarn struggled. The putt missed left and rolled 3½ feet past the hole.

Led Mel Reid and Hyo Joo Kim by one stroke. He was the first non-South Korean victor since Rickie Fowler in 2011 to win the Korean Open.

She posted a round of 2-under 70 to hang on to her wire-to-wire dream at 9-under 207 after 54 holes, but Saturday's round wasn't without some wobbliness coming down the stretch.

New Zealand's Lydia Ko is up one spot to 18 after finishing tied for 10th.

Although winless on the LPGA Tour and never having led an LPGA tournament previously, Green continued to play with unflappable poise.

"That was world class; the way she closed out that tournament". Alex Chiarella won the Lethbridge Paradise Canyon Open for his first Mackenzie Tour.

Duffy Waldorf was a stroke out of the playoff after a 68. Jean-Francois Remesy shot 5-under 67 for a one-shot victory over Barry Lane in the Farmfood European Legends Links Championship on the European Staysure Tour.
