Attack on Saudi airport leaves one dead, several others injured”

Pompeo used rare emergency powers, citing Iran as a threat, to authorise $8.1 billion in weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, despite concerns in the US Congress that the arms will go to kill civilians in the devastating war in Yemen.

The president took to Twitter Monday morning to ask "why are we protecting the shipping lanes for other countries (many years) for zero compensation", arguing that "these countries should be protecting their own ships on what has always been.a unsafe journey". The U.S. abruptly called off military strikes against Iran in response to the shooting down of an unmanned American surveillance drone on Thursday.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed Iran and maritime security with rich Gulf Arab allies during a trip to the region on Monday after President Donald Trump called off a military strike to retaliate for Tehran's downing of a U.S. drone.

Pompeo, who met Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, described Saudi Arabia and the UAE as "two great allies in the challenge that Iran presents".

Saudi Arabia and the US accused Iran of being behind attacks on tankers near the Persian Gulf in recent weeks, while the UAE has been urging diplomacy to avert a wider conflict. The Saudi-led alliance has yet to verify the redeployment or meet it by pulling back pro-coalition troops massed on the outskirts of Hodeidah.

On the official Twitter page of the US Mission to Saudi Arabia, Abizaid sent condolences to "the families and friends of those injured or killed in this outrageous attack on civilians".

Global human rights groups accuse the coalition of indiscriminate bombings, targeting hospitals, markets and other civilian infrastructure as well as provoking a humanitarian catastrophe, by blockading the country's ports.

Trump and his administration's unwillingness to officially link Khashoggi's slaying, which occurred in October at Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul, to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman led to a backlash among US legislators.

In an interview broadcast on NBC on Sunday, US President Donald Trump said Khashoggi's killing has been "heavily investigated", but he declined to commit to ordering the FBI to investigate the murder.

"No one has granted them a hunting license in the Middle East". When further pressed on the issue, Trump swiftly shifted the subject to Iran, as he had done in previous instances. This is a vicious, hostile place. If you're going to look at Saudi Arabia, look at Iran, look at other countries, I won't mention names, and take a look at what's happening. Since then, Saudi Arabia has intercepted multiple Houthi-launched drones.

Saudi Arabia's military spokesman Col.

Iran claims that the drone violated its airspace, which the United States denies.

Saudis blame Iran for supplying the rebels with high-tech equipment, while Tehran denies the charge.
