Democrats announce that Robert Mueller will testify before Congress

Democrats announce that Robert Mueller will testify before Congress”

"Pursuant to subpoenas issued by the House Judiciary and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence tonight, Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III has agreed to testify before both committees on July 17 in open session", according to the release.

The House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees announced Tuesday that Mueller had agreed to testify after they issued subpoenas for his testimony, and Mueller would appear in public before the two panels next month.

The subpoenas to Mueller come after weeks of negotiations between Democrats, the special counsel's team and the Justice Department.

In a letter to Mueller accompanying the subpoenas, the committee chairmen said "the American public deserves to hear directly from you about your investigation and conclusions".

"The report is my testimony", he said.

It is unclear if Mueller would in fact provide anything beyond what is in his report during testimony, but he already said he will not. There has been discussion about an appearance before Congress.

The news conference emboldened some Democrats' demands for answers and a push to launch impeachment proceedings against Trump.

Mr. Mueller spent almost two years leading a team that probed the 2016 election, Russian attempts to interfere, and President Trump's behavior both during the campaign and afterward as president.

"While the special counsel found that no Americans conspired with Russian Federation to attempt to interfere in our elections, many have willfully misrepresented that conclusion while Democrats have neglected their responsibility to safeguard future elections from foreign influence".

Still, he said: "If we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so".

"I hope the special counsel's testimony marks an end to the political gamesmanship that Judiciary Democrats have pursued at great cost to taxpayers", he said. "And now, every American will get to hear directly from Mueller".

Mr. Nadler, meanwhile, told CNN he won't allow the White House and Justice Department to restrict Mr. Mueller's testimony.

Mueller's team concluded that there was insufficient evidence to charge any member of President Trump's campaign with conspiring with Russians to interfere with the campaign.
