Europe heatwave MAP: France on ALERT for 40C - when will temperatures peak?”

During the 2003 heatwave, temperatures hit a record high in Paris of 40.4°C in Paris.

"It will be very hot during the day, there will not really be any coolness at night and we will have very high temperatures nearly never seen before in fact probably in June in France", said François Gourand, Forecaster at Météo France.

Meteorologist Francois Gourand reportedly said: "We are expecting a heatwave that will affect many regions, more than half of France, of maximum intensity".

Water is expected to be delivered to homeless people, and local authorities have set up air-conditioned public places in Paris where residents can escape the heat.

France has an "orange" warning in place, the second highest, with temperatures set to rise over 40C.

Organisers at the Women's World Cup, which is being hosted by France, could be faced with implementing Federation Internationale de Football Association heat precautions, since knockout games are being played every day this week except Wednesday and Sunday.

French Health Minister Agnes Buzyn said Monday that "everything is ready" in retirement homes, hospitals and transportation systems. The precautions include holding cooling breaks during matches and postponing games if the heat is too intense.

"Yet when people are fragile, even when everything is organised, there's always a higher mortality rate", she warned.

In Belgium, the Royal Meteorological Institute also issued a severe heat warning, saying it was expecting temperatures in the range of 34 to 35C from tomorrow, with similar hot weather also expected in Switzerland.

Rome is forecast to reach 36C and Berlin could see 37C, while the eastern state of Brandenburge is at risk of forest fires in the coming days.

Scientists say measurements show heat waves in Europe are becoming more frequent.

Stefan Rahmstorf, a climatologist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research told The Associated Press: "This increase in heat extremes is just as predicted by climate science as a outcome of global warming caused by the increasing greenhouse gases from burning coal, oil, and gas".

Dim Coumou, a scientist at the Free University of Amsterdam, said melting Arctic sea ice is also affecting atmospheric circulation, which in turn makes extreme heat more likely.

France introduced a heat watch warning system after a long, deadly heatwave in August 2003.

However, the warmer weather in Ireland is set to end before the weekend when it will become fresher with rain or showers at times, according to Met Éireann.

The European Union's Emergency Response Coordination Center warned the heat wave is expected to peak by Thursday afternoon, where temperatures can reach more than 96 degrees Fahrenheit and rise above 104 degrees throughout most of the continent.
