Google Drive is testing a full offline storage mode for all files

Google Drive is testing a full offline storage mode for all files”

Now Google has added an Offline mode to its Google Drive service, allowing users to access their files in Chrome without needing to be online. Eligible customers will need to apply for the beta program to be able to test the feature out. As with the Backup and Sync client, Drive File Stream lets users make Drive files available for offline access. There is no word on when this feature will roll out for all Google Drive users, but now that it is being tested, it should happen soon. Thankfully, offline modes are here to save us.

Google has confirmed that the current version of this feature doesn't work with Chrome OS, but it will bring the feature to the platform in the future. They can apply for the beta programme, and all the admins who opted into the testing of offline mode for Docs, Sheets, and Slides will automatically be whitelisted for this beta as well.

Google Drive offers a convenient way to store files in the cloud so they are accessible everywhere, but only Google's own file types are available offline for editing using the web app.

The offline mode can be enabled from the Drive or Docs settings.

There's another drawback for the offline storage preview: it's now only available to organizations using G Suite, not to individual Google account holders, which is a pity.

Additionally, users can also right click and open any non-Google files using native applications. "Now, users can access their important non-Google files in an offline setting, like when they're traveling or when there's poor internet connectivity".
