Mets manager Callaway, pitcher Vargas fined after fiery confrontation with reporter

Mets manager Callaway, pitcher Vargas fined after fiery confrontation with reporter”

The Mets fined manager Mickey Callaway and starting pitcher Jason Vargas on Monday, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen announced. "So I think frustrations were high and I think [Callaway] understands that from a leadership position, we can't lose control, and he knows that's something that should not have happened".

Once reporters had moved into the visitors' clubhouse, Callaway walked through to get to the food room when Healey told him, "See you tomorrow, Mickey". "I think it's unfortunate for all parties".

Callaway's message in the second meeting with the media seemed to be that he apologized directly to Healey, which is why he didn't apologize again via the press. "It's something I'm not proud of, I'm not proud of the distraction". "I was just saying, 'I'll see you tomorrow.' And then he said, 'Get this guy out of here'". I'm not proud of the distraction. "Everyone deserves respect regardless of job title or role, and I hope people can understand this is a tough game played by passionate competitors and I hope moving forward we can all do our jobs honestly and critically and understand other people are involved". He called the incident an "unfortunate distraction" and declined to take questions from reporters Monday.

Callaway's team is 37-41 and there's been some consternation about his management this year, particularly his use of the bullpen. Callaway ended up yanking a visibly upset deGrom, who threw just 89 pitches and allowed one earned run through 6 2/3 innings in a game NY lost.

Citing an anonymous industry source, Van Wagenen made the call to remove Jacob deGrom from his June 1 start against the Diamondbacks in the seventh inning due to a hip cramp. deGrom was visibly frustrated with his removal.

Healy shared his side of the story with Newsday and denied he was being, as Callaway said, "a smart-(expletive)".

"We are committed to trying to create a healthy work environment for everybody", Van Wagenen said.

Asked if it was fair to question whether he could handle the ups and downs of a season considering his outburst, Calloway said "Billy Martin punched a reporter one time".
