Microsoft rolls out security-enhanced ‘Personal Vault’ feature for OneDrive users

Microsoft rolls out security-enhanced ‘Personal Vault’ feature for OneDrive users”

OneDrive Personal Vault is a new section of your storage that's accessed through two-step verification, or a "strong authentication method", although Microsoft didn't define the latter term. That could be a code sent via text message or email. OneDrive free users and standalone users can store a limited number of files in Personal Vault whereas Office 365 subscribers can store unlimited files. And you'll automatically get de-authenticated after a period of inactivity-that's the key to Microsoft's special security argument here.

"Personal Vault adds to the robust privacy and security that OneDrive now offers, including file encryption at rest and in transit, suspicious activity monitoring, ransomware detection and recovery, mass file deletion notification and recovery, virus scanning on download for known threats, and version history for all file types", stated Microsoft's announcement. So, files in the Personal Vault will be protected even when someone gains access to your account or your device.

Users will have to be patient about this update, because Personal Vault will be getting a gradual rollout.

The new feature will begin rolling out soon to users in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, though Microsoft expects Personal Vault to be available to all OneDrive users by the end of the year. But as part of a handful of new features announced last week, PDF files can now remain in-place within Office 365 in a customer's OneDrive or SharePoint document library.

On the PC, meanwhile, if you're running Windows 10 then you'll get a synchronized copy of what's in the Personal Vault that's encrypted by BitLocker. The tighter security option seems meant to give Microsoft customers more peace of mind for backing up very sensitive or important personal information. The new secure storage area can also be unlocked with the Microsoft Authenticator app. The subscription is doubling, from 50GB to 100GB, though stays at $1.99 per month. If you're managing a truly massive file situation, you can buy 1TB of extra storage for $9.99 a month. Once it has locked, any files you were using will also be locked and will require reauthentication to access. You can add storage in 200GB increments to your account, starting at $1.99 a month for the first 200GB of additional storage. Additional storage can be increased and decreased at any time.
