Trump to meet Xi, Putin at G20 in Japan

Trump to meet Xi, Putin at G20 in Japan”

China's official Xinhua News Agency said on Tuesday that the call took place at the request of United States officials.

"The president [Trump] is anticipating meeting with President Putin at the G20", the official said on Monday. The prime minister will have about 10 bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, including with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trump and Macron, the sources said.

A senior U.S. official said on Monday that Trump views the meeting with Xi as a chance to see where Beijing stands on the two countries' trade war, and is "comfortable with any outcome".

The meeting comes as the world's two largest economies step up their tariff skirmishes in an escalation of their long-running trade war, a development that has roiled financial markets and impacted global growth.

The meeting with the Chinese president - which is highly anticipated as the two sides try to reach a deal on trade - is expected to take place on Saturday, the second day of the summit, in Osaka.

The sides are at an impasse after 11 rounds of talks that have failed to overcome USA concerns over China's acquisition of American technology and its massive trade surplus.

Instead, Washington increased its 10 percent tariffs to 25 percent on 250 billion US dollars of Chinese goods imported to the United States. "It is expected to be a conversation that will focus primarily on regional security issues including Iran, Ukraine, Syria, Middle East".

Trump left the G7 summit in La Malbaie, Que. last June having agreed to a joint statement from the trading bloc on trade, but fired shots at Trudeau on Twitter over auto tariffs and Canada's supply management policy immediately after departing.

A lot has changed in the year since U.S. President Donald Trump called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "dishonest and weak" on his way out of the 2018 Group of Seven summit in Quebec.

The official declined comment when asked whether Trump would travel to the demilitarized zone dividing the two Koreas while he is in the South.
