U.S. seeks funds for peace plan but details vague and Palestinians unhappy”

Opening a two-day global meeting in the Gulf kingdom of Bahrain, U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner said prosperity for Palestinians was not possible without a fair political solution to the conflict.

"Over the past decades there have been numerous stops and starts to the Palestinian economy".

That plan calls for a Palestinian state drawn along borders which predate Israel's capture of territory in the 1967 Middle East war, with its capital in East Jerusalem and refugees' right of return - points rejected by Israel. The proposal is to encourage investment in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Enthusiasm has also been tempered by the Trump administration's refusal to endorse the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, the "two-state solution" that has been long viewed internationally as the only viable path to lasting peace. This is Miriam Abu Dakka of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

During his opening speech, Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump's senior White House adviser and son-in-law described the peace plan as "the opportunity of the century" and not just the "deal of the century".

But Kushner said that the Palestinians have been ill-served by previous peace-making efforts. This is the only way to peace and prosperity. The Economic Plan: A New Vision for the Palestinian People.

Kushner stated that the economic plan would lead development and create one million jobs and reduce unemployment by about 10 percent.

"While the document's authors correctly identify numerous Palestinian economy's most pressing needs, they fundamentally misdiagnose the root causes of its problems".

But he added that by working to develop the Palestinian economy, the result could be "a real peace that leads to prosperity".

"CMEP believes a political solution that grants the Palestinian people their full freedom and right to self-determination is a necessary prerequisite to economic prosperity". Hamas will also organize a rally this evening to denounce the gathering.

"How can the President of the highest governing body of football, and the most outspoken person on the importance of separating politics from sports, agree to participate in a political workshop whose objective is to determine the future of Palestine in the absence of Palestinians?" the letter said.

Hani Elmasri, the head of the Masarat think tank in Ramallah. wrote an article in which he said that the "Trump deal will not succeed without a Palestinian cover, and will fail sooner or later, but while the plan has not succeed in liquidating Palestinian nationalism it has succeeded in stressing the facts of the occupation and made the possibility of a Palestinian struggle much more hard". Kushner's glossy brochure features USAID programs this administration has cut, and individuals this administration has marginalized.

"I think we all have to recognise that if there ever is a deal, it's not going to be along the lines of the Arab peace initiative", he said.

"Instead of repurposing old ideas and claiming them as their own, we strongly urge the Trump administration to reaffirm its support for a two-state solution, which has been USA policy for decades".
