Wickenheiser heads six-member Hockey Hall of Fame class

Wickenheiser heads six-member Hockey Hall of Fame class”

Wickenheiser was selected for the sport's most prestigious honour in her first year on the ballot and will enter the Hall of Fame with three players that have been passed over for consideration before in Sergei Zubov, Vaclav Nedomansky and Guy Carbonneau. The Boston College head coach was announced as one of the six inductees in the class of 2019 on Tuesday.

Her decorated career also includes stints with Kirkkonummi Salamat of Finland's division II league (where she became the first woman to score a goal in a men's professional league), a try-out with the Swedish club IFK Arboga IK, and a one-year contract with Eskilstuna Linden (in the Swedish men's third league). "When you win seven world championships as one of the key players and captain and when you win four Olympic gold medals, have a storied career both on the women's side and play on the men's side in Finland, that should tell you in itself where she was looked upon and revered by the rest of the hockey world". She now works as the assistant director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

American forward Jenny Potter, Canadian goalie Kim St-Pierre and Canadian forward Jennifer Botterill also are eligible this year. Carbonneau will join Canada women's icon Hayley Wickenheiser, defenseman Sergei Zubov and forward Vaclav Nedomansky as players enshrined, along with Jim Rutherford and Jerry York in the Builders category.

The induction ceremony for the 2019 class will be November 18 in Toronto.

"People thought when I became a defensive player that I'd sacrifice a lot of offense".

"I appreciate my accomplishments being recognized by the Hockey Hall of Fame", Nedomansky said in a statement. I see it the other way.

A three-time Selke Award victor as the National Hockey League's top defensive forward, Carbonneau spent 19 years in the NHL with 13 coming with the Habs. It gave me chances to put numbers on the board.

Rutherford has won two Stanley Cups with the Penguins and also won one with the Carolina Hurricanes when he ran that organization.

I NCAA coach Jerry York. He then went on to serve as the Penguins' GM and won back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017, which earned him the GM of the Year award in 2016. We certainly weren't the odds-on favourite to win it that year.

Before becoming an National Hockey League front office executive, Rutherford played in the National Hockey League for 13 years Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings and Maple Leafs.

Nedomansky would go on to play 421 National Hockey League games over six seasons with the Red Wings, Blues and Rangers, scoring 122 goals and 156 assists.

Nedomansky played 12 seasons in Bratislava before becoming the first athlete from an Eastern European communist country to defect to North America to pursue a pro hockey career.

Russia's Zubov joined the Rangers in 1992 after playing four seasons with the Moscow Red Army.

Andy Bathgate, Leo Boivin, Paul Coffey, Ron Francis, Tim Horton, Mario Lemieux, Joe Mullen, Larry Murphy, Mark Recchi, Luc Robitaille, Bryan Trottier, and now Zubov are former Penguins players in the Hall of Fame. A native of Watertown and a Boston College alum, York has led the Eagles to a 600-315-86 record during his tenure, winning four NCAA titles (2001, 2008, 2010 and 2012).

"It's truly special. You realize you've done something in your life that you can be proud of". With Bowling Green, there was George McPhee, Rob Blake and at BC I've had Brian Gionta, Brooks Orpik, Marty Reasoner, Johnny Gaudreau.
